By Greg Wright, 2016 GEDA Board Chair

If you missed this year's Spring Workshop at Sea Palms, you missed a great one.  Brian Dill and his conference committee deserve a huge THANK YOU for all the hard work that went into the conference.  From the interesting and informative sessions and speakers to the great networking and social events, everything was outstanding.  Even Thursday afternoon’s thunderstorm could not put a damper on the conference.

My sincere thanks to the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD).  The GDEcD board met on Wednesday at St. Simons and gave the GEDA leadership an opportunity to talk about our association and about our work to promote economic development in the state.

The success of the conference was tempered by the announcement that our Secretary-Treasurer, Brian Dill, would be resigning his seat on the board.  If you have not heard, Brian has accepted a position as Vice President of Business Development and Government Relations with Tanner Health Systems in Carrollton.  While we hate to lose his leadership on the board, I know that this is a great opportunity for Brian.  We appreciate all that he has done to help our association, having served as a committee chairman (sponsorship, no less), board member and Secretary-Treasurer.

At its meeting on May 18th, the Board approved a recommendation from the Nominating Committee to appoint Pat Merritt from Georgia EMC to fill Brian's unexpired term.  Pat has been a member of GEDA for many years and has served on the board previously.  She is a great leader in the state of Georgia, and I know she will do a great job in her new leadership position.

The update of our five-year strategic plan continues to move forward.  Thanks to the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, we are well on our way to rolling out the finished product at the Annual Meeting in September.  My thanks to the members of the planning committee for their time and commitment to the process.

Finally, I had the pleasure of attending a recent reception to recognize the contributions Joe Riley has made to economic development in our state through his work at Georgia EMC.  Joe has been involved in some of our state's largest economic development projects and has been a loyal GEDA member for years.  Joe is an inspiration to all who know him, and I join his other friends and colleagues in honoring his hard work on behalf of the people of Georgia.

Thanks for all you do for economic development in Georgia and for what you do to help make GEDA the great organization that it is.
