Money! Money!! Money!!!

My youngest “duckling” graduated from high school a week ago, and we have quickly transitioned to the college mentality of scheduling for orientation, decorating the dorm room, choosing first college classes and the ever-necessary task of applying for scholarships. During this time, I cannot help but be reminded of the scholarship/grant money available from our organization. When I first was asked to be a committee chair with GEDA, and attended my first board meeting years ago, I learned that we have a hard time giving our money away each year. Honestly, I did not really believe it! Since then, I have watched year after year go by and we almost always have money left over. So I would like this year to be different!
GEDA has made it as easy as possible to apply for and receive money - there is only one application and when you fill it out, it applies to ALL of the grants. There is still money available to pay for GEDA membership (for communities not currently members), money for the Annual Conference in Savannah, money to take Georgia Certified Economic Developer classes, money for IEDC classes (if it will benefit your community, let us pay for it!), money to take the CEcD exam, and money that is not designated – meaning we are open to suggestions! Don’t be intimidated by the application, especially if you are a new member or new to economic development. Saralyn Stafford (Professional Development Committee Chair) or I will be glad to help you fill out the application – with pleasure. If you have ever thought about registering for a class or conference, now is your time.
On another note, as transitions occur, it is time to be thinking about those who will be stepping into leadership roles for GEDA next year. If you know of someone you would like to nominate for the board, please let us know. We want to make sure that our leadership comes from every region in the state and is representative of both large and small organizations. Visit our GEDA website at to see our current board members. Our nominating committee will be meeting after our June luncheon, so get your suggestions in now. See you at the luncheon!
