2016 GEDA Board Chair
I hope you were able to attend our lunch on March 21 with Gray Swoope. As the former head of economic development in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Florida, Gray shared his wealth of experience and knowledge with us. My thanks to the University of Georgia for sponsoring the lunch and to the Georgia Department of Economic Development for sponsoring our speaker.
Working in a community that has benefited greatly from the film and video industry, I am excited about our April luncheon program. Deputy Commissioner Lee Thomas and her team at the GDEcD have done an incredible job of promoting the film and television industry in Georgia. With Georgia's leading industry professionals joining her on the program, you will learn a great deal from their insight. Click here to register.
The Georgia General Assembly concluded its 2016 legislative session, and I was very proud of GEDA's involvement. Jim Finch serves as GEDA's legislative monitor and keeps track of legislative issues during the session. Additionally, Al Nash, chairman of our Public Policy Committee, helped ensure that GEDA stayed on top of issues during the session. Toward the end of the session, we became aware of a provision in a bill that would have greatly impacted companies that have bond deals through a development authority. Al and Jim alerted us to the issue and enlisted the help of Benjy Thompson and the Development Authority Executives Committee. Within 36 hours, the provision had been removed from the bill after development authorities and companies in their communities voiced their concerns. This was a great victory for our organization.
As we look ahead, it is time for GEDA to update its five-year strategic plan. You will be receiving a survey to give you an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas on the future of our organization. I hope you will take the time to complete the survey to help guide our future.
Finally, I encourage you to register for Spring Workshop at Sea Palms, St. Simons Island scheduled for May 18-20, 2016. Brian Dill and his team have put together a great program, and I know you will benefit from the conference.
Thanks for your continued support of GEDA and for what you mean to economic development in Georiga.
