Report from GEDA – Day at the Capitol: January 28, 2016
By Kevin Shea
GEDA Legislative Day was held in the State Capitol this year. A big thanks to our sponsor, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, Attorneys! We couldn’t have done it without you, Dan McRae.
On the morning of Thursday, January 28th, Governor Nathan Deal shared an Economic Development-special proclamation with GEDA and took a photo with our member-group on the second-floor, north-wing steps. Then, Greg Wright, GEDA Chairman, and President, Coweta County Development Authority; Anna Chafin, GEDA First Vice Chair, and CEO, Development Authority of Bryan County; and Jim Finch, GEDA Legislative Monitor; were hosted by Speaker David Ralston and Representative Ron Stephens, (R) District 164-Savannah, Chairman of the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee, on the House floor to receive a Resolution in support of GEDA.
The Senate invited several of us, including Missy Kendrick, GEDA Second Vice Chair, and Executive Director, Barnesville-Lamar County Industrial Development Authority; Al Nash, GEDA Public Policy Chair, and Executive Director, Development Authority of Fulton County; Greg Wright; Anna Chafin; Kevin Shea, GEDA President; and other GEDA-members into its Gallery to be recognized by Sen. Brandon Beach, (R) District 21-Alpharetta, Chairman, Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee.
At a short program, several speakers welcomed us and shared brief remarks, including our Chairman Greg Wright; Senator Brandon Beach; Representative Ron Stephens; Dan McRae; Commissioner Chris Carr; and Anna Chafin. We hosted Legislators and other elected State leaders, in addition to GEDA members, to lunch on The Varsity hot dogs, hamburgers, onion rings and French fries. Overall, members had a great day, and we served more than 450 people.
On Wednesday before GEDA-Day at the Capitol, Greg Wright, Anna Chafin, Grant Cagle, Marketing & Communications Assistant, Department of Community Affairs; Karen Ewing, CMP, Manager, Member Services, GEDA; and Kevin Shea delivered gifts of selfie-sticks, along with a reminder-invitation to our lunch and a copy of the GEDA Public Policy statement. Grant Cagle was of tremendous help with the event, including snapping photographs and being a great all-around help. Thanks also to John Bremer, Coastal Region Manager, Ordner Construction, for his help, particularly with logistics and trash disposal. Some unsung heroes that help us regularly, and we don’t thank enough, include Gina McKinney, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner, Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD); Shirley Williams, Administrative Specialist, GDEcD; Danetha Belk, Marketing Specialist, Global Commerce, GDEcD; and Mary Ann Lamonica, Administrative Coordinator, Global Commerce, GDEcD. Thanks to all for a great day at the Capitol!
